Cantoría Lights Up Beacon Hill Concerts with “El Fuego” on May 26

Becky Hofman · April 26, 2024

Cantoria, a Spanish quartet, stand and sing in front of a large painting

Beacon Hill Concerts is excited to present “El Fuego” by Cantoría, a Spanish vocal ensemble from Barcelona. Experience the talents of Cantoría on Sunday, May 26 at 6:00pm at Beacon Hill Music Hall.

Founded in 2016, Cantoría is a Spanish vocal quartet specializing in music of the Spanish Renaissance (16th & 17th centuries). Returning to the Beacon Hill stage is Cantoría’s soprano Victoria Cassano, who previously performed with Vox Luminis in 2022.

Now on their first U.S. tour, Cantoría has performed at major festivals and venues all over Europe, in Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Germany, the UK, Poland, and Croatia. Their CD, Mateo Flecha “El Viejo”: Ensaladas, has earned three prestigious recording awards – the Diapason Découverte Award (France), the German Record Critics Prize, and the Melómano d’Oro (Italy).

“El Fuego” features a selection of 13 songs by two Spanish Renaissance composers, Mateo Flecha (1481-1553) and Juan del Encina (1468-1529), as well as two pieces from Flecha’s most important work, Ensaladas. A literal “salad” of four-part songs, Flecha’s Ensaladas features popular light-hearted tunes in different languages and dialects. Cantoría will also perform other works by Flecha from Renaissance Songbooks, including the famous Ríu Ríu Chíu, and three secular pieces by Juan del Encina, taken from the important manuscript, Cancionero Musical de Palacio.

The quartet’s musicianship, youthful energy, and vibrant stage presence combine to create a powerful connection with their audiences.

Cantoria is quickly building an international presence in the Early Music field. You won’t want to miss this chance to hear them!

Reservations: You must have a reservation to attend this concert. As in the past, Dan accepts reservations for concerts one month prior to the concert date. Reservations for Cantoría open on Friday, April 26, 2024. Make your reservation by emailing Dan, indicating the number of seats you wish to reserve and the NAMES of all attendees. Your reservation is not “official” until you receive confirmation from Dan and is only valid for the named attendees. There is no admission fee, only a “suggested donation” at the door of $20 adult / $15 senior / $5 student.

Don’t delay! Make your reservation early if you are definitely planning to attend.

Sidnie and I look forward to seeing you all and sharing with you this unique musical event.
