My recent drawings explore the growth of towns and cities and the demise of natural habitats through the personage of D. Erich Proprius, a now-forgotten showman who wandered the American West with his little dog during the 1890s. I think of Proprius–a cultured man who disdained wealth, befriended Native tribespeople, and vanished among a herd of bison–as emblematic of conflicts that underlie the environmental crisis: wilderness and civilization, nature and culture, growth and destruction.
