Black and White: Stand and Unite, Sit and Reflect
Race relations, gender relations, and politics in general seem more polarized than any other time in my memory or experience right now. I feel so passionately angry and in opposition myself in a way I never have before. The representation of good as white in color, and evil in black, is a concept rooted in our culture that bears thinking about. The two swans are equally beautiful, graceful, and gentle in my mind, and I hope on this “canvas” are united. Can we not see the positive similarities without attaching a preconceived meaning to their color? They may be opposites, but they are equal, and there is no reason to attach negativity to either. I have come to see myself as swan in this stage of life. I have gone through a “chicken” phase, where I felt unable to fly, plucked clean, and pecked to death. I liberated myself from a bad marriage and became a “dove” flying in the clouds of hope and possibility, with a sense of being held by the holy spirit. Now, I feel the power of the symbolism of the swan, as messengers of faith, artistry, longevity and awakening. The chair is a place to remember one very important messenger.
