In 2018, St’ART Stroudsburg, an affiliate of the Pocono Arts Council, served as a conduit between businesses and individuals interested in having murals created on their property and artists looking for an opportunity to create mural artwork. St’ART Stroudsburg administers the program, and the building owner and businesses within the building fund the program. Murals will remain in place at the sole discretion of the owner(s).
The aim of the mural program is to add vibrancy to the community and provide opportunities for artists to create and display their creativity.
The mural selected to appear on the wall of The Cure Cafe, 517 Main St., Stroudsburg, was designed by visual artist and graphic designer, Pat Cummings.
The mural is a cartoon-style evolution chart, showing the progression of pop/rock music over the generations. It starts with a blue guitarist and builds to a modern teen composing on a laptop and finishes with a silhouette of a child encouraging the next generation to make the future their own. The mural depicts familiar icons, but is not intended to represent actual musicians.
Mural Project History
In 2015, Jody Singer and Ashley Catherine Fontones created St’ART Stroudsburg to continue a mural program in the community. St’ART Stroudsburg also created St’ART Experiences, a street art program that creates experimental workshops for developmentally challenged individuals and ESIU 20 programs.
In 2016, two 18’ x 24’ murals were created in Downtown Stroudsburg.
In 2017, a public mural, also hosted by St’ART Stroudsburg, was created at the Mountain Center in Tobyhanna, PA by Jillian DeLuca. Two additional murals were created on Ann Street in Stroudsburg, PA by Kayla O’Connor and Carly Kripps, as part of the Artworks for Businesses program.
In 2018, St’ART Stroudsburg is a committee under the Pocono Arts Council and has been meeting and working to re-frame a program to bring together people interested in having public mural(s) on their building wall or other supporting structure with qualified artists using their talents and creativity. This idea has mutually beneficial outcomes – a new public mural is born which automatically attracts attention to the mural location; and stipends are now paid to artists for the work to create the mural (after their concept is chosen and the murals are completed). Paints and other supplies are also provided. Each mural is coated with anti-graffiti coating after they are created. Committee members include two Pocono Arts Council board members, Jody Singer and Brandon Jones, and volunteers Jane Mayhew MacHale, Nora Goodwin and Jake Roth.
Project Street Art
In 2014, Project Street Art began as a collaborative effort led by Shane Izykowski, team leader, as well as Ashley Fontones, Brandon Jones, Sonya Leticia, and Jody Singer. The program began under the non-profit status of the Sherman Theater and then shifted under the umbrella of the Pocono Arts Council. A total of 11 installations were completed in Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg, PA. Project Street Art officially disbanded in 2015 as members moved on to new endeavors. The amazing results can be enjoyed on a stroll through Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg and by visiting Project Street Art on Facebook.
