We would like to share a local initiative we are undertaking to raise awareness about the national epidemic of suicide. Nationally, each year we lose over 5,000 teenagers a year to suicide. Since the year 2000, the national suicide rate has generally increased, with over 47,000 suicide deaths in 2017.
Monroe County Suicide Prevention Coalition is dedicated to the prevention of suicide through community education; we also recognize that suicide is a national health problem across the lifespan and our mission is to reduce stigma associated with mental illness and suicide. Our coalition is made up of various human service, educational, governmental organizations and community members, many of which have lost loved ones to suicide; all are dedicated to the cause.
In an effort to raise awareness and educate the community about signs, symptoms, and help-seeking, we are sponsoring a T-Shirt Contest for all Monroe County High School Students. The contest will close March 2, 2020 and all submissions will be due by then. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jim Presto at moc.y1579820916esmur1579820916@otse1579820916rpj1579820916 or Jaclyn Kreshock at gro.s1579820916dhmpm1579820916c@kco1579820916hserk1579820916j1579820916
Our theme for the contest is: Pocono Proud – A Community That Cares
Four judges will view and choose a first, second, and third place submission with the first place selection being printed on a t-shirt and sold county wide. Proceeds will be split between Monroe County High School Aevidum groups. Aevidum stands for “I’ve Got Your Back” and was formed in order to help engage students to change the culture of their schools and communities to become more positive.
